Channel 4 Pallet

Channel 4 pallette.

All the 4 logos come from this Channel 4 pallette (unsure about more4).

Film 4 Off Air Pallette.

 Film 4 On Air Pallette.

 E4 Off Air Pallette.

Digital onscreen graphic

Do I include one?
Don't I?

I can imagine some people finding the on screen graphics irritating, especially when the BBC tried to include them on BBC1 and BBC2 and received complaints and therefore removed them.

So this research suggests that people are becoming more accepting of DOGs however, there are many comments underneath this, from TV viewers who are laughing at the these results as around 99% of the comments are negative. In fact I can't find a single comment of around 30 posts that agrees with the research findings.

Dictate your own colour scheme

BBC have acknowledged that people who are partially sighted, struggle with some websites and launched a trial site called MyDisplay allowing the user to change the colours, font size and font.

Colours for my target audience

I have been looking into colours that the older generation may prefer/ be able to see. My font choice will be influenced by what would be easier for someone who may be partially sighted to read.

I found a forum on designerstalk.com that helped to solve this problem...

These logos are quite bright and eye catching. I think the age UK logo would be an easier logo to read. The Help The Aged logo looks quite sinister, as the association of yellow for me is a hazard or warning. The font for age UK looks quite friendly compared to Age Concern, as it is quite rounded without any sharp serifs.

This is a friendly looking logo for Saga, an over 50s insurance, travel magazine to accompany a very user-friendly website:

Then I found this little gem:

A PDF for a web designer who kindly posted it to the forum...

9. Launch

Here is the extremely cheesy launch for Channel 5:

Here is the Channel 4 launch:

8. End Programme Screen (Closing Branding)

Here is an example from the BBC:

The guidelines are as follows:

  • Be the correct version of the animated 'BBC Productions' logo
  • be white of black only
  • be centred wherever possible
  • appear over the same background as the other programme credits, or over black
  • not use dropped shadow.
This is the spec for Channel 4 end credits:

7. Ident (Non Channel 4)

Channel Dave: This is a film ident, with the Dave logo appearing on the side of the cars, and using Dave 1 as the reg. plate. Plus the flag! BBC Three: I am a huge fan of the BBC idents, they are memorable and captivating and a great way of promoting the channel brand! I can remember this one from 2008, it isn't film like the Dave one, but it just goes to show a clever animation can be just as effective: My absolute favourite, nothing too fancy, no crazy effects, just a catchy, familiar jingle and some strange creatures nodding their head and singing. With 3D text (THREE) in the background, with a plain dark blue backdrop and some kind of spotlight: Another from the blob series, with the voice of Andy from Little Britain: This is a funny one, I am not quite sure what it's supposed to mean, but these are little old lady blobs who go to church: Another Little Britain themed one - promoting the channel and the programme: This is a BBC 2 ident that takes me back to my child hood, the fluffy squeaky dog type thing! Again, like the recent BBC 3 ones, the background is very simple, no laser beams, just an animated fluffy 2!

7. Ident

Screen shots from E4 idents:
To sum the idents up, they are bright and innovative, and have a fun, entertaining element to them which suits the tone of voice for the channel.

Moving E4 idents:

These are idents for Channel 4 - famous for its innovative response, I love the extreme to which scale is pushed to create those few seconds where the elements do read the number 4 but within seconds they are just separate elements again:

I have only just noticed on this one - even though I have seen it hundreds of times- where the 4 is!

And of course the very sneaky April's Fool idents:

6. In-programme pointer

Showing programmes, now and next:

This is in the same E4 style and works with the brand, it is a good way to show what will be on and what's on next - although most TV's now have in-built EPGs.

From 0:10 to 0:31 this shows the in-programme pointer and how it is animated:

These are stills from the Channel 4 in-programme pointer:

Targeting My Audience

Although this is about Portugal, it is still relevant:

This next piece looks at Global marketing trends:

Pre-launch Promo

If I had a knowledge of film with animation I could produce a pre-launch promo like this one for More 4, it was a DVD free with the Guardian:

This was also a pre-launch promo for More4 that caused controversy and confusion:

By the following screen shots its clear where this attitude came from:

This is a Pre-Launch promotional ad for Channel Dave before it started on UK Bright Ideas Channel:

5. Menu

The first 5 seconds show the E4 menu: Purple tape which unveils the title in white type, plus the E4 logo.

The following screen shots are from Channel 4, and show how the menu format can also be used to display programme information:

4. Pre-launch Screen

I still remember this screen from when I was a child, waiting for the Spice Girls to launch it.
This was displayed on the frequency of Channel 5.
I cannot find another channel that has done this...

Screen shots from the Spice Girl pre-launch sting:

3. Sting

I have been unable to find any moving stings for Channel 4 so these are screen shots, they are a second long roughly and appear in between adverts:
